EMPRESS DAY 2024
EMILY ISAACSON
Poet
Celebrates the year of Women of Waterhouse. . .

Velvet tie that once secured her bonnet
now ties gentle waist to the bottom’s murk
where river nyads dance and aged lurk
to tap her gentil forehead in the net.
Abandoned fish will wander, silver, here,
and children peer beneath the ghostly air,
with their white dresses billowing, with fair
remembrances of her who sat so near.
Emily Isaacson, Requiem of Ophelia

The Year of Women of Waterhouse
Many of Emily's poems from this year are inspired by John William Waterhouse, pre-Raphaelite painter.
"He depicted in his paintings, women of poetry and myth, including Shakespearean women and Greek goddesses. Since my first glimpse of The Lady of Shalott at a friend’s house, I have admired Waterhouse. I set about this year with the intent to study the subjects of Waterhouse, and these poems are the fruit of my studies. The poems with woman characters Saint Cecilia, Flora, Destiny, Thisbe, Saint Eulalia, Ophelia, Elaine, Juliet, Cleopatra, Miranda, Orithyia, and Circe are based on the subjects of his paintings."

Quote from introduction of Isaacson's next book.

EMPRESS GREETINGS
for December 11
Requiem of the Bells is the poem for the Empress’ well wishes this Christmas. The story takes place at a cathedral, where two prophets vie as rivals to give the best prophetic word: Deborah, a woman-farmer of White pines and the bell ringer.
Read our December Newsletter
Everybody has a story, and nothing tells the events of Poet Emily Isaacson's life better than her newsletter. Find out first-hand what it means to be a winter swan in Canadian culture. Her prolific gift of poetry continues to enchant readers of all countries as much as when The Fleur-de-lis was first released in 2011. Each new poem that demands her time and attention is as detailed as dress-making.

Isaacson travels the rural countryside of Greater Vancouver and Vancouver Island with her camera lens ready for a watercolour-esque shot full of romance and the essence of slow-living. She strikes out barefoot on the roadsides of the world, while keeping the routine of burning nightly incense. Her vintage-quality prints, canvasses, pillows, and other quote-laden products in her online store make her an industrious artist who not only spends the time to make each design resonate with the recipients, she crafted each quote to be a favourite to her long-time readers in the first place. Nothing quite resonates the magic of verse in our hearts and minds like an iconic Isaacson.

WATER FLOWERS
Our “Water Flowers” collection that inspired the “Requiem of the Waterflower” by the Poet, evokes a sense of easy romance, with soft colors, lovely draping fabrics and flattering silhouettes. When designing this collection we looked to Elivish imagery and medieval clothing, as well as the grace of water lilies, mythology, and Art Nouveau concepts. We created all of the dresses to inspire the wearer to walk along mossy riverbanks with their true love, float on a peaceful lake on a lazy afternoon, or enjoy the shade of a beautiful old tree.
The body of the dress is made from either white or light blue cotton poplin, The sleeves of the dress are made from natural silk chiffon which makes them very light and likely to dance in the breeze, and the seams along the arms are connected with beautiful pearls, giving them a sense of opulence. The trim embellishes the neckline and sleeves with a line of faux pearls, and every single pleat on the bodice is finished with dozens of little beads. While this dress is indeed as beautiful as the Empress, the construction and craftsmanship truly make it a work of art.

SEA BORN
This flax linen tunic for the Empress is based on simple, historical patterns and made to be pretty, comfortable, and universal to the medieval era. The “Sea Born” collection has a sense of wanderlust to it, for those who wish to wander misty coasts and dance through the waves of desolate, unnamed beaches. The designs, jewelry, and trims throughout the collection all have elements of the sea to tie them together.

The dress is embellished with fine details that make it truly ArmStreet quality, such as the wonderful trim that has been created by our artists. They took inspiration from the sea and waves, as well as Western European artwork to create the flowing pattern. We have crafted this dress from 100% flax linen, which is a great all-weather fabric. It’s a natural textile and is still popular today for breezy, soft clothing. This dress has been expertly made and features strong, neat seams and nice finishing—perfect for an Empress.

It has been used for centuries for its beautifying characteristics, particularly for rejuvenating the appearance of skin. Today, Frankincense essential oil has extraordinary benefits when used topically and aromatically and is an Empress favourite for the bath and for her fair porcelain skin.

A Visit From
Saint Nicolas
by Clement Clarke Moore General Domain. 1779 –1863
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."
HOFFMAN MEDIA
Our Hearts Are in Scotland is Victoria Magazine's love letter to this extraordinary land, a magical place that inspired beloved Canadian poet Emily Isaacson to compose these memorable words:
“In this meadow,/the goldenrod,/crackling underfoot,/the sky a stormy/chase of thunder …/She stands,/two immigrants/in sorrow at the task/of Scotland, shapely/in a coat of arms.”
